Digital Design Portfolio |
This portfolio contains four projects combining various aspects of urban planning and digital design. The focus of these projects have been centered upon the Pike/Pine Conservation Overlay District in the Seattle neighborhood of Capitol Hill. The establishment of the conservation district is in response to the growing popularity of the region, attracting external institutions looking to invest and redevelop the neighborhood to supply new housing and mixed used opportunities. Design guidelines have been developed for the PPCOD in an attempt to preserve the gritty industrial feel, emanating from the rich auto row history. Influenced by this urban issue, this portfolio includes personal designs demonstrating historic preservation, character structure relocation, zoning updates, and the transfer of development potential.
Geographic Information Systems
Along my academic pathway, a skill I really wanted to develop was Geographic Information Systems or GIS mapping and data integration. To demonstrate my growth in this line of work, I've included a sample of GIS planning projects I've completed. These projects include evaluating environmental conservation areas, comparing metropolitan demographics, and analyzing land value.
CEP Team Client Project
In addition to digital design and mapping, I've also had the opportunity to work as a part of a team. For this project, our 10-man team functioned as Urban Planning Consultants, preparing a sustainable development analysis for the Mount Baker Hub Business Association. The goal of this project was to supply the research necessary to influence the development of sustainable infrastructure into the area in the near future. My contribution to this project was thoroughly developing the Property Assessment component which sought to understand the current conditions of the North Rainier/Mount Baker region. This analysis included researching and mapping the existing parcel vacancies, property values, zoning, and currently permitted construction projects.
GIS Team Client Project
Aside from working as a team member, I have also had the opportunity to function as the project manager of a client-based project. I facilitated the generation of a bike theft analysis report for the University of Washington Police Department. For the scope of this project, we wanted to work with the UWPD in order to spatially represent bike theft occurrences to better influence their patrols around the University District. This entailed performing statistical calculations to track temporal trends and generating target areas based on density and proximity analysis.
Creative Urban Inquiry
Transitioning from formal reports to creative research write-ups, this paper works to pair ideal city theories of the past to modern day urban issues. More specifically, this report reviews the comprehensive plans of Ebenezer Howard’s Garden City and Le Corbusier’s Contemporary City, in order to apply their frameworks to the expanding metropolis of Las Vegas. My colleague and I
attempt to integrate the current urban components of Las Vegas into the aforementioned idealized city plans to effectively highlight structural changes that work to address the contemporary issue of sprawl.
